Bad Bunny’s historic blockbuster residency at San Juan’s Coliseo may have just taken a spectacular close—much of the island watched the live telecast of the grand finale, after all—but that the arts and culture scene in the island’s capital is far from taking a bow. In fact, the season is just getting started. For a small sun-kissed city in the Caribbean, San Juan punches far above its weight, delivering a sophisticated and entertaining program. Here are some of this season’s great performances that will surely appeal to our Marco Polo Travelers.

Marco Antonio Solís – Más Cerca de Tí World Tour

The maestro of Spanish-language ballads brings his global tour to Puerto Rico. Since leading Los Bukis through their ’70s and ’80s heyday, Solís has become Latin music’s premier songwriter of romance and heartbreak, thanks to songs like “Si no te hubieras ido” and “Tu cárcel”. His live performances reveal why critics have considered him as Latin America’s answer to Paul McCartney.

Fausto

Goethe meets contemporary choreography in this season opener from Ballets de San Juan. Artistic director Adolfo de La Toba strips away 19th-century excess to reveal the psychological tension behind the Faustian bargain, set to Gounod’s score. The production features scenic design by architect Jaime Suárez, whose ceramic work graces galleries across the Americas. For a company approaching its eighth decade, this production represents remarkably fresh thinking.
