While the downstairs pool decks and private beach loungers require purchasing a paid day pass, you can head straight upstairs to locally owned Ocean Lab Brewing Co. The second-floor restaurant and taproom is completely open to the public (you just pay for parking at the gate). Snag a seat on the open-air deck overlooking the surf, order a flight of their locally brewed Sunset Amber or Pale Ale, and pair it with fresh fish tacos as the sun dips below the horizon.

DRIVE OUT TO PIÑONES FOR AUTHENTIC STREET FOOD BY THE WATER
If you have a rental car or don’t mind a slightly longer Uber, keep heading east past the airport onto Route 187. Within minutes, you will hit Piñones, a legendary coastal mangrove stretch that serves as the area’s capital for traditional street food.
This is a completely unpretentious, windows-down type of drive. Stop at any of the roadside wooden food kiosks using traditional wood-fired stoves. Order an alcapurria (a crispy green-banana fritter stuffed with savory beef) or a massive bacalaíto (codfish fritter). Grab a cold coconut water straight from the shell, then take a walk over to La Pocita (PR-187, Loíza, 00979), a calm, shallow natural pool protected by a large rock reef.

WIND DOWN WITH ROOFTOP DRINKS OR ELEVATED LOCAL FARE
Before heading back to your rental for the night, stick around for Isla Verde’s nightlife, which features everything from intimate speakeasies to world-class local chefs.
For dinner, book a table at Caña by José Enrique (6063 Av. If you prefer a quieter, more dimly lit vibe, seek out Vagabundo Social Speakeasy (1265 C. It feels like an old-school study, serving up precisely crafted whiskey drinks far away from the resort crowds.

KICK OFF WITH SOME OPEN-WATER ENERGY
Isla Verde Beach is wide, expansive, and has some of best surf conditions in San Juan. How you spend your morning depends entirely on your pace, of course.
If you want a high-speed thrill, head to the sand behind the main resort strip and look for Walking on Watersports (12c Calle Gardenia, Carolina, 00979; walkingonwatersports.com) to rent a jet ski. Cutting through the Atlantic chop gives you a completely different, wind-whipped perspective of the city skyline.
If tearing across the waves on a motor isn’t your thing, walk a bit further down to Pine Grove Beach. Protected by a natural sandbar, this section features gentle, rolling waves that are perfect for a relaxed swim. It is also the island’s premier hub for beginner surf lessons. You can drop by the Pine Grove Surf Club (Isla Verde Beach, Carolina, 00979; pinegrovesurfclub.com) to rent a board or take a low-pressure, one-hour lesson with local instructors who know the break perfectly.

LUNCH AND MODERN DINING AT THE MALL OF SAN JUAN
When you need to get out of the midday sun, skip the usual beachside fast food and take a quick 10-minute Uber slightly across the Teodoro Moscoso Bridge to The Mall of San Juan (The Mall of San Juan Blvd, San Juan, 00924). It operates less like a traditional shopping center and more like a curated food hub.
We recommend Il Nuovo Mercato. It is a vibrant, Italian-style open market where you can grab fresh crudo, wood-fired pizza, or a glass of wine at the central Prosecco bar overlooking the lagoon. For a more Caribbean experience, try the mall’s outpost of Metropol, which serves up authentic Cuban and Puerto Rican dishes.
